Your journey begins with a pick-up from Nairobi in the morning. You’ll travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned safari vehicle along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway towards Tsavo East National Park. The drive takes approximately 4 to 6 hours, passing through the scenic Chyulu Hills and offering glimpses of rural life along the way. Your guide will provide insights into the history of Tsavo and its diverse wildlife during the journey.
Arriving at Tsavo East National Park, you’ll be greeted by the stunning landscape that characterizes this famous park: vast plains, acacia trees, and the red-dust terrain that gives the park its distinctive feel. After entering the park, you’ll head to your lodge ,Sentrim Tsavo East Camp, which offers comfortable accommodations in the heart of the park.
After a quick check-in and freshen-up, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at your lodge.
In the afternoon, your guide will take you on your first game drive through the park. Tsavo East is known for its large elephant herds, and you’ll likely encounter these majestic creatures as they wander the plains. Apart from elephants, you may spot the park’s iconic maneless lions, herds of buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and a wide variety of antelope species such as gazelles and impalas. You’ll also have a chance to see a diverse array of bird species, as Tsavo East is rich in avian life.
As the sun sets, return to your lodge to relax and enjoy a sundowner, before heading to dinner in the lodge’s restaurant. The evening will provide a chance to reflect on your exciting first day in the park.
Start the day early with a hearty breakfast before embarking on a full day of game drives. This day is designed to offer you an in-depth exploration of Tsavo East, maximizing your chances to see more of the park’s incredible wildlife.
You’ll begin with a morning game drive, as early mornings are often the best time to see predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs. The cool morning temperatures make this a prime time for spotting active animals, including large herds of elephants and wildlife along the park’s famous Galana River, a popular watering hole. The river is known for attracting a variety of wildlife, including crocodiles, hippos, and bird species.
Mid-morning, you’ll return to the lodge for a relaxing break and lunch. During this downtime, you can enjoy the lodge's amenities, such as a refreshing dip in the pool or simply relax on your veranda, taking in the beautiful surroundings.
After lunch, you’ll head back out for an afternoon game drive, taking in different parts of the park. Tsavo East offers diverse habitats, from riverine forests to open savannahs and rocky outcrops. Depending on the time of year and the specific route your guide takes, you may be lucky enough to see the park’s rare wildlife species, including leopards and cheetahs, both of which thrive in this vast wilderness. You’ll also encounter plenty of birdlife, from ostriches to the vibrant lilac-breasted roller.
As the sun sets, return to your lodge for dinner. The evening is free for you to relax and unwind, or you may opt for a night game drive (optional, at an extra cost), which gives you the opportunity to spot nocturnal creatures such as hyenas, jackals, and maybe even a lion hunt under the stars.
After a relaxed breakfast, you’ll head out for a final morning game drive in Tsavo East. The early morning hours are once again perfect for spotting wildlife as it’s cooler and animals are more active before the midday heat sets in. Your guide will take you through some of the park’s most famous game-viewing areas, giving you a chance to capture last-minute photographs and enjoy the stunning scenery one last time. The Mombasa-Nairobi railway line runs through the park, and you may spot the iconic trains crossing through the bush.
After the game drive, return to your lodge for an early lunch before checking out and beginning your journey back to Nairobi. Along the way, you’ll drive through the park’s eastern and southern sections, catching more glimpses of wildlife as you exit.
Arriving back in Nairobi in the late afternoon, your guide will drop you off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward flight.
